Dan Timberlake currently serves as the Director of the Virginia Department of Planning and Budget. He was first appointed DPB Director in August 2008 by then Governor Timothy Kaine and was re-appointed by Governor Robert McDonnell in 2010. In January of 2014, Timberlake was re-appointed as Director by Governor Terry McAuliffe. He previously served as Deputy Secretary of Finance from 2006 to 2008. With nearly 29 years of public service experience as an employee of the Commonwealth of Virginia, including the last 17 years in leadership roles, Timberlake has worked with top executive and legislative leaders in Virginia on finance, policy, and legislative issues covering a variety of program areas.
A graduate of the College of William and Mary, Dan Timberlake began his state career as a legislative aide in December 1984. His state service since that time includes two years at the Department of Transportation as an analyst, over 10 years at DPB where he progressed from analyst trainee to senior analyst, and more than 9 years at the Virginia Department of Education as the Assistant Superintendent for Finance prior to beginning his time as an appointed official.
As State Budget Director, Timberlake is a member of the National Association of State Budget Officers (NASBO) where he recently served as Chair of the Education Committee and was a member of the organization's Executive Committee.
