Michael Maul

Effective April 8, 2022, Michael Maul became director of the department.

Michael Maul is the director of Virginia’s Department of Planning and Budget (DPB). He has worked at DPB for nearly 40 years, serving under eleven Governors. Working as a budget and policy analyst for over ten years, Mr. Maul went on to serve as an Associate Director for over 25 years, overseeing nearly every division at DPB at one time or another and touching most every element of Virginia state government. Mr. Maul has also been responsible for overseeing DPB’s capital outlay budget process.

Mr. Maul has been an active participant in activities of the National Association of State Budget Officers (NASBO) and has served as an instructor at NASBO’s “Introduction to State Budgeting Seminar” since 2002. In addition, he has served as an international instructor for the Financial Services Volunteer Corps.

Mr. Maul received his Bachelor of Science degree in Environmental Resource Management from Allegheny College, and his Master of Environmental Management and Master of Business Administration degrees from Duke University.
